Description

Anklets of great weight were forged onto women’s legs to be worn to the grave unless they were removed by blacksmiths. These anklets were part of a woman’s dowry and symbols of status. In the mid-twentieth century the government forbade women from wearing these anklets as it was said to make them look like slaves. The large anklets are now valued only as a currency.
